A Doughnut Shop We Had to Check Out
We were walking around Universal CityWalk when we spotted a huge Voodoo Doll. Of course, I had to go see what it was.
Turns out, it was a doughnut shop!
We don’t eat doughnuts very often, but once I saw Voodoo Doughnut, I knew I wanted to try some. Instead of buying them right then, we came back the morning we were heading home so I could pick up a dozen to take back to the girls and hopefully bring a few to the salon.
Spoiler alert: the salon never got any.

Picking Our Doughnuts
I chose an assortment box that came with five of their more traditional doughnuts and seven of the crazy ones. I also bought the Voodoo Doll doughnut separately because there was no way I was leaving without trying the doughnut that caught my attention in the first place.
The Voodoo Doll was filled with raspberry jelly, covered in chocolate frosting, and had a pretzel stake stuck right through it.
I ate that one before we left CityWalk, and then we started the drive home with the rest.
Taking a Dozen Home Wasn't Such a Great Idea
By the time we got home, some of the toppings had melted. The doughnuts were placed together in the box in a way that didn’t allow all of them to lay completely flat, so a few ended up sticking to each other.
They definitely didn’t look quite as pretty as they did when we bought them.
That didn’t stop Mike or the girls.
They went for the normal-looking doughnuts first, while Mike started cutting little pieces from some of the stranger ones so everyone could taste them.
Remember how I said I was going to bring some to the salon?
Yeah…by the next morning there weren’t any left.
Sorry, ladies. Maybe next time.
The Crazy Doughnuts
Starting from the top left in the photos, our assortment included:
The Homer – A ring doughnut dipped in strawberry-flavored frosting and covered in round sprinkles.
The Loop – Vanilla frosting topped with Fruit Loops.
Triple Chocolate Penetration – A chocolate cake doughnut topped with chocolate frosting and Cocoa Puffs.
Sprinkle Cake – A plain cake doughnut with vanilla frosting and sprinkles.
Blueberry Cake – A blueberry cake doughnut finished with glaze.
Grape Ape – Vanilla frosting, grape dust, and purple sprinkles.
This one was a NO for me.
I actually had to spit it out. If they were going for grape flavor, they definitely succeeded because grape was ALL I tasted.
Voodoo Bubble – Vanilla frosting, bubble gum dust, and an actual piece of bubble gum.
I didn’t even want to try this one. I tossed the gum before the girls tried the doughnut.
The More Traditional Doughnuts
The five less adventurous choices were:
- Raised Glazed
- Chocolate Old Fashioned
- Portland Cream
- Peanut Cake
- Maple Bar…I think
And honestly, those were much more our speed.
Fun to Try, But Would I Buy Them Again?
Voodoo Doughnut is definitely an experience. The shop is colorful, the doughnuts are fun to photograph, and some of the combinations are unlike anything you’re going to find at your neighborhood doughnut shop.
But the crazy doughnuts just weren’t my cup of tea and surprisingly, even my girls weren’t interested in eating some of them.
I also don’t think the assortment we got was worth the price for us. Part of the problem was that the staff selected the doughnuts in our box, so we ended up with several flavors we probably wouldn’t have chosen ourselves.
There were other doughnuts on the menu that looked much more like something we would enjoy, so I wouldn’t completely rule out trying Voodoo Doughnut again. Next time, though, I’m picking my own doughnuts.
And if you’re buying a box before a long drive home, keep in mind that all those crazy toppings might not look quite as pretty by the time you get there.
